Rough Excavation Left Unfinished — Dugong Fit Where Appropriate

Define the finished purpose, reference levels, underlying material condition and the evidence required by the receiving operation. Geometry alone does not establish structural or agronomic performance.

This reference assembles relevant extracts from the guide library. It is general project planning, not a local project report, verified specification or translated technical publication.

From Rough Grade to Fine Grade

Rough grading establishes the broad shape; fine grading corrects the remaining smaller deviations. Trying to finish while bulk quantities are still wrong can waste passes and disturb completed areas. The changeover should occur when levels are close enough, materials are suitable and the receiving surface is ready for controlled trimming.

Before moving material

Complete major excavation and isolate unsuitable ground.

Receiving operation and checks

Protect the finished area from uncontrolled traffic and schedule the next layer. Check local levels and continuity through joins, not only the average elevation.

Fine grading cannot rescue a weak formation hidden beneath a neat finish.

Rough Earthworks

Rough earthworks may still contain broad quantity errors, loose fill and unresolved drainage. Fine trimming should begin only after the larger formation is understood.

Before moving material

Survey the bulk surface and identify unsuitable or unaccepted areas.

Receiving operation and checks

Verify the corrected formation before the next layer. Check areas where bulk machines turned, stockpiled or discharged material.

A finish pass cannot establish the suitability of buried fill.

Bulk Excavation

Bulk excavation removes major quantities or unsuitable material before the surface-finishing stage. Plan where the excavated material goes before the work blocks later access.

Before moving material

Confirm excavation limits, services and material handling requirements.

Receiving operation and checks

Inspect exposed formation before controlled redistribution or fill placement. Compare excavation limits and remaining formation with the design.

Deep excavation and stability questions need their appropriate specialist methods.
