Washouts — What Not To Assume
Define the finished purpose, reference levels, underlying material condition and the evidence required by the receiving operation. Geometry alone does not establish structural or agronomic performance.
This reference assembles relevant extracts from the guide library. It is general project planning, not a local project report, verified specification or translated technical publication.
Washouts
Washouts identify where runoff has removed material. Restoring levels without changing the erosive flow can produce the same failure again.
Before moving material
Inspect the upstream catchment, discharge route and remaining stability.
Receiving operation and checks
Re-establish and protect the surface with the appropriate stabilisation method. Inspect during later runoff and check the repair's edges.
Deep scour, unstable banks or structural damage may require specialist work.

Repeated settlement suggests the problem may lie below the visible surface. Filling a depression again can hide a weak or poorly prepared layer.
Before moving material
Record the timing and extent of movement and review material history.
Receiving operation and checks
Repair the confirmed cause and re-establish the intended layers. Monitor the repaired area under the intended use.
A scraper guide cannot diagnose geotechnical failure from a photograph.
Read the complete Repeated Settlement Diagnosis guideWhy Water Returns After Grading
Water that returns to a repaired depression may indicate an unchanged outlet control, continuing inflow or settlement. Treat the recurrence as new evidence rather than simply repeat the same pass.
Before moving material
Compare the repaired levels with the drainage route and water observations.
Receiving operation and checks
Observe another suitable rainfall or irrigation event. Record where and when water reappears.
Subsurface and hydraulic causes may need specialist assessment.
