Cut Fill Plan — How To Plan Drainage
Define the finished purpose, reference levels, underlying material condition and the evidence required by the receiving operation. Geometry alone does not establish structural or agronomic performance.
This reference assembles relevant extracts from the guide library. It is general project planning, not a local project report, verified specification or translated technical publication.
Cut-and-Fill Mapping
Cut-and-fill mapping shows differences between existing and target surfaces. Its colours are useful only when the surfaces share compatible references and the legend's sign convention is understood.
Before moving material
Check survey and design datum, extent and revision.
Receiving operation and checks
Use the map to plan movement and remeasure progress. Check sample locations and distinguish geometric volumes from usable material quantities.
Do not equate map balance with a guaranteed material balance after compaction.
Read the complete Cut-and-Fill Mapping guideExcessive Cut-to-Fill Distance
Excessive cut-to-fill distance increases travel time and can make a small-load method inefficient. The first remedy may be better material balancing rather than a larger implement.
Before moving material
Map the cuts, fill deficits and usable haul routes.
Receiving operation and checks
Verify quantities and finish after the selected movement plan. Time a realistic trial including empty return and turns.
Nominal travel speed cannot establish job productivity.

Drainage grade design must connect the contributing area to a suitable outlet. Selecting a numerical fall before checking the outlet can produce a surface that cannot discharge as intended.
Before moving material
Survey entry points, structures and the receiving level.
Receiving operation and checks
Inspect the constructed route and its transitions. Check invert continuity and controls at crossings.
This guide does not size drains or establish discharge permissions.
