Commercial Landscaping — Drainage And Fall

Define the finished purpose, reference levels, underlying material condition and the evidence required by the receiving operation. Geometry alone does not establish structural or agronomic performance.

This reference assembles relevant extracts from the guide library. It is general project planning, not a local project report, verified specification or translated technical publication.

Commercial Landscaping

Commercial landscaping combines finished levels with paths, buildings, trees and drainage. The critical edges often lie at thresholds and connections to hard surfaces rather than in the middle of the landscaped area.

Before moving material

Confirm finished levels and protect services and retained vegetation.

Receiving operation and checks

Install paths, irrigation and planting in the planned order. Check transitions beside structures and the depth of the growing layer.

Do not grade over unlocated services or use unspecified fill beneath load-bearing features.

Poor Surface Drainage

Poor surface drainage can result from a blocked outlet, a reversed fall, a damaged crossing or local depressions. Grading should follow the identified cause.

Before moving material

Trace water from its entry point to the receiving outlet.

Receiving operation and checks

Inspect the drainage route during a suitable water event. Check that the complete route remains connected through boundaries and crossings.

Surface grading cannot remedy every subsurface drainage problem.

Incorrect Fall

Fall is the change in elevation along a defined direction. An incorrect fall can include a reversal, an insufficient gradient or a gradient that differs from the design.

Before moving material

Identify the start and end points, distance and elevation reference.

Receiving operation and checks

Measure the corrected profile independently. Check intermediate points because correct end levels can still hide a local dip.

There is no universal drainage fall appropriate to every project.

Record the job inputs

Use this checklist to turn the scenario into a specific brief. Retain the design revision and agree who accepts each completed layer.

Checklist ticks apply only while this page is open. Include the completed brief in your project records.
